CD front and back cover- 1 minute music video

Today we finished the front and back of the CD cover. We did the back on Publisher and the front on Adobe Photoshop. Here is what they look like:
Front cover

Back cover

We stayed to our initial ideas for the front of the CD cover apart from adding the female characters braid at the bottom. We mainly kept to our original plan of the CD back cover as well, other than adding a picture of the artist.
We used colour correction on both the photos on the front and back cover to make the shots more vibrant and make the cover reflect the happy upbeat song which we made a music video for. Furthermore, for the braid on the front cover we edited it on Photoshop by cropping out the background.

1 minute music video

CD cover ideas - 1 minute music video

As we did the finishing touches to our music video by completing the editing we began to discuss ideas for how we want our front and back cover of our CD to look. During the pre-production process we did have ideas of doing graphic design on our cover but we have now decided against this as we won't have enough time.

For the front of our CD cover we thought about using a photo we took during the filming of our music video. We all agreed that a photo of the female character in the music video would look the best for the front cover. Here are some options for photos we could use:
Option 1

Option 2

Option 3

For the back cover we feel that we could either have the female character's braid with daises in (close up) or just a bundle of daisies (close up). Here are some of the photos we took for it:

Here's a quick sketch which Laura did for the front and back CD cover based on our initial ideas.

Seventh meeting for 1 minute music video

Today we finished editing our 1 minute music video. We added more photos and clips to fill in the missing segments. Also we colour corrected the video to brighten it as when we filmed the scenery was very dull. We may need to add some more effects to make the transition smooth.
Tomorrow we will make the blooper/behind the scenes reel as we have lots of extra footage and we thought it would be interesting to show.

Sixth meeting for 1 minute music video

In today's meeting we began to edit our music video. We put all the clips we have in order and we changed the colour of the green screen background for the four clips of people clapping. I learnt how to do this by using a tutorial I found on YouTube. The four colours we choose were: yellow, purple, blue and pink as they match the theme of our video.

After

We also edited the background when Elsie lip syncs the words. Here's the before and after:

Next we downloaded and added the music to make sure the clips were in time. I had to cut some clips out that didn't work, lengthen some that weren't long enough and shorten some that were too long. However, this created gaps in the video so next lesson we will need to find a way to fill them in, maybe by adding more pictures.

Fifth meeting for 1 minute music video

Today we filmed the majority of our shots, such as the high angled shot of Laura on the floor, her looking out the window, the boy (Me) walking out the door, Laura's character following him, me sawing some wood for the lyrics "he's a man of his own inventions", Laura in the park swings for the lyrics "She's a girl with the best intentions" and a range of other shots.

Here are some screen shots of them:

We also filmed some behind the scenes and have some outtakes. I'll add these to this post later once we've edited it.

Fourth Meeting for 1 Minute Music Video

Today Elsie, Laura and I took some pictures which will put at the beginning of the video after the lyrics "come on" to introduce the character and things that she likes to do. This will go to the beat of the music. We took photos of her reading, jumping up in the air, outside on the field with flowers in her hair, drawing and sat on the grass against the tree.

We also filmed a high shot of Laura spinning around with he flowers in her hair to show the carefree personality of the character in the music video.

Finally, we organised where we would meet for the next meeting, the time to meet as well as locations. Tomorrow we will be filming at the local church, spar, park and at Laura's house. We have booked the equipment needed which is a DLSR, tripod and shoulder mount.

Third meeting for 1 minute music video

Today Elise and I started filming, we used a tripod, DLSR and a pop up green screen. We filmed the parts in which Elsie lip syncs and I played the music in the background for reference.

We also filmed people's hands clapping to the beat which included Elise's, Alex's, Mr Welch's and mine. Music was played in the background for this as well to make sure it matched the clapping on the track which follows one of Pete Fraser's nine top steps to success making a music video for A level.

For the lyric "come on" we tried to do an extreme close up of Elsie's lips but it was blurry so we decided to do a mid shot, in editing we may zoom in.

Laura and Josie did some practice shots using a cloning effect. We may use this in a segment of the chorus. However, Josie is no longer in our group.

Here is the video of all the shots so far which were edited in movie maker, although this is very different to how the finished product will look because it was done quickly to get ideas, so the lip syncing and some clapping shots are not exactly in time.

Storyboard for 1 minute music video

Here is the storyboard that we have made for our 1 minute music video. We have been using to help us during the filming and editing of our final product. We will probably not follow it directly as we may come up with better ideas or something may not workout the way we want.
(The question marks in the last two boxes mean that we are not sure exactly what we are going to put at the ending of our video. This is because we don't know what more ideas we might come up with when finding locations and what is available).

Second Meeting for 1 minute music video

We started to gather more ideas for the narrative. Here is what we have gotten so far:
  • 0-6 seconds we will have four different shots of people clapping from different angles. This may involve turning/flipping the footage when editing.
  • 6-7 seconds with the lyrics "Come on" will have myself lip syncing the words.
  • 7-12 seconds will have four pictures which will go for each bar of music that will be Laura doing a variety of things such as painting and reading.
  • 12-15 seconds with the lyrics "She's the girl with the best intentions" will have myself lip syncing and then I'll turn my head to the side so we can use some sort of transition.
  • 15-18 seconds will have a shot of Laura at a park on a swing.
  • 18-21 seconds with the lyrics "He's a man of his own invention's" will have myself lip syncing.
  • 21-23 seconds will have the actor playing the male role in a science lab doing an experiment with a Bunsen burner.

Here's some more ideas we've had:
  • During the chorus having Laura on the floor surrounded by things she's collected which will fit the lyric "I want something that I want". Also, have Laura taking things off a shops selves showing her curiosity in everything and her want for something.
  • If there is any space in music that needs to be filled we could just have people dancing, for example, have close up's of their feet when their dancing. As well as film as much footage of Laura on the floor surrounded by things to keep flashing back to it.

First Meeting for 1 minute music video

Today we decided on groups and who we would be working with. I will be working with Laura, Elsie and Josie and together we decided on the song Something That I Want by Grace Potter. This was released in 2010 and was apart of the movie soundtrack of Tangled a Disney film which used the song during the ending credits. We think the genre of this song would be classed as a pop, love song. We made sure that the song would end at an appropriate time at the end of the first chorus, making it end at 1:02.

We have begun the storyboard and wrote down some ideas for the video. We decided that Laura would be the female role and I would be the singer lip syncing the words. We are still figuring out who will play the male role.

Here is some extra information we found out:
  • Used in video games such as Disney INFINITY series (instrumental) and Disney Crossy Road.
  • It is on the Tangled Original Soundtrack album and Now Thats What I Call Disney 3.
  • It was written and composed by Grace Potter.

Some ideas we got down:
  • Shot of hands clapping to beat at the beginning using different angles.
  • Match on action - To the lyrics "He walked out the door".
  • Quick cuts to match upbeat and happy song.
  • Vibrant lighting - Will create a more positive feeling to the video which is what we want.
  • Low and high shots - Laura looking out the window.
  • Pan to Laura quickly at the beginning when she's introduced with cut zoom.
  • Make boy look free with the lyrics "He's a man of his own inventions" - long shot.

Recommended music videos

Here are some of the music videos people in my class recommended as good or interesting:

Maroon 5 - Payphone

I think that this video had connotations of a action movie including explosions, guns, and robbery. This may make people into that genre of film watch this music video because it is based off something they like. The video shows a typically normal working man; wearing a suit and working in an office, this makes the video relatable to normal, working class people. However, this could also be representative of a 'superhero' movie as the main person seems to have an alter-ego as well as being an average man.

DNCE - Cake By The Ocean

This song has many characteristics of a pop song; it has an up-beat dance sound, bright colours and a fun atmosphere. It is represented as not a serious song and bit crazy, which shows the style of the band and how they want to be perceived. This is the first song made by this band as they were only formed in 2015 so it probably won't be the best music video they will produce and might just been seen as a bit of fun, to introduce us to them as a band.

Coldplay - The Scientist

This again is a very different type of song this is more of a serious ballad. It has a simple concept which is very effective and passionate. The video is shot in reverse, this could be reflective of the man wanting to go back and start over again, as at the end we see the unfortunate incident that influences the emotion in the song. This video seems to have a powerful message and could be seen an allegory for something bigger, making it more personal and thought-provoking than many popular songs.

Sia - Elastic Heart

This video is very different from most as the singer doesn't appear in it but her lyrics are expressed through dance. This video shows a man and a child trapped in a cage, the artist (Sia) expresses that the girl could be seen to represent one of his self states; his inner child, or one of his demons. An interpretation could be that, the man and the girl being caged in is similar to the feeling of being trapped inside your mind with your thoughts and inner demons. As the video shows the girl can go in and out of the cage, this could show that these demons he carries around can go and come back at any moment, which could be a strong metaphor for anyone who is battling with such things in their mind e.g. anxiety attacks. This song is part of a trilogy that includes the same young girl expressing the lyrics through interpretive dance, she could be seen as a representative to the artist herself and the struggles she faces with personal torments.
