Glitch effect

We added a glitch effect on the last shot before the instrumental because it segways well into the quick cuts of Elsie having a breakdown as it initiates the broken shots.

Here is a screenshot of how it looks on our video:

Here is a tutorial video we watched on YouTube about how to do the glitch effect:

CD cover analysis - Motion in the Ocean

I have decided to do a CD cover analysis from the album Motion in the Ocean by McFly because this is the album in which we have picked our song for our final music video off of, and it may help to find out which target audience the song/album was aimed at, and what genre it is.

Band website analysis

One requirement of our course is to create a band website so that we can show how we would present ourselves to the public. Therefore I have done an analysis of an already existing band website so that we could get some inspiration. I chose to analyse McBusted's website because they are very much like the band McFly, in which we are making a music video for, for one of their songs.

Here is a copy of the email I sent to McFly's record company asking for permission to use their song for our music video.

Genres and sub-genres mind-map

Genre and sub-genre mind-map
This is a mind-map exploring the different sub-genres around Pop music. I chose Pop sub-genres because this is the genre in which we are thinking about basing our own music video off, specifically Rock Pop.
You can click on the picture to enlarge it and if you would like to see it closer the link in the title will take you to the sight showing a more detailed version of this mind-map which will be easier to read from.

Recommended music videos

Here are some of the music videos people in my class recommended as good or interesting:

Maroon 5 - Payphone

I think that this video had connotations of a action movie including explosions, guns, and robbery. This may make people into that genre of film watch this music video because it is based off something they like. The video shows a typically normal working man; wearing a suit and working in an office, this makes the video relatable to normal, working class people. However, this could also be representative of a 'superhero' movie as the main person seems to have an alter-ego as well as being an average man.

DNCE - Cake By The Ocean

This song has many characteristics of a pop song; it has an up-beat dance sound, bright colours and a fun atmosphere. It is represented as not a serious song and bit crazy, which shows the style of the band and how they want to be perceived. This is the first song made by this band as they were only formed in 2015 so it probably won't be the best music video they will produce and might just been seen as a bit of fun, to introduce us to them as a band.

Coldplay - The Scientist

This again is a very different type of song this is more of a serious ballad. It has a simple concept which is very effective and passionate. The video is shot in reverse, this could be reflective of the man wanting to go back and start over again, as at the end we see the unfortunate incident that influences the emotion in the song. This video seems to have a powerful message and could be seen an allegory for something bigger, making it more personal and thought-provoking than many popular songs.

Sia - Elastic Heart

This video is very different from most as the singer doesn't appear in it but her lyrics are expressed through dance. This video shows a man and a child trapped in a cage, the artist (Sia) expresses that the girl could be seen to represent one of his self states; his inner child, or one of his demons. An interpretation could be that, the man and the girl being caged in is similar to the feeling of being trapped inside your mind with your thoughts and inner demons. As the video shows the girl can go in and out of the cage, this could show that these demons he carries around can go and come back at any moment, which could be a strong metaphor for anyone who is battling with such things in their mind e.g. anxiety attacks. This song is part of a trilogy that includes the same young girl expressing the lyrics through interpretive dance, she could be seen as a representative to the artist herself and the struggles she faces with personal torments.

Media 1.0 and 2.0

David Gauntlett is a British sociologist and media theorist. His earlier work concerned contemporary media audiences, and has moved towards a focus on the everyday making and sharing of digital media and social media. In 2007, Gauntlett published online the article Media Studies 2.0, which created some discussion amongst media studies educators. The article argues that the traditional form of media studies teaching and research fails to recognise the changing media landscape in which the categories of 'audiences' and 'producers' blur together, and in which new research methods and approaches are needed.

Media 1.0 was when media was expensive and difficult to produce different types of media. For example people used to have to listen to the radio of read the newspaper to know when certain shows are on. Also the cinema was massive back then as there wasn't many alternative ways to watch a movie unless you queued up to see it at the cinema. However even the cinema only showed one movie at a time as it was much more expensive to produce the content and distribute it. During the time of Media 1.0 they also needed bigger recording equipment and a big broadcasting company to distribute their films.

Media 2.0 then came and changed all this because now we can consume media from multiple different devices e.g. smartphones, laptops and tablets wherever we want. An example of Media 2.0 is the making of music videos so people can now watch what they are listening to on various types of media devices. The music video 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams is an example of a music video that pushes the boundaries of world-wide media in which a 24 hour video was created by people all around the world.

Basically media 1.0 was about finding and media 2.0 is about filtering.
